Gender Diversity in Management

According to current research, gender diversity in management makes good business sense. Companies with gender-balanced leadership report increased collegiality, less ‘group-think’ and better insights into the consumer market. And research has shown a positive correlation between gender diverse leadership teams and improved corporate performance.

Yet the numbers of women in the senior executive ranks remains relatively low. Women make up 45 per cent of the paid workforce in Australia and well over 50 per cent of university graduates. At last count, however, the Australian Census of Women in Leadership reported that only 8 per cent of executive key management roles in the top 200 ASX listed companies were held by women.

If we want to get really serious about improving our gender diversity record and maximising all talent available, what action is required?  Will the introduction of targets in senior ranks lift our game? What other measures should be considered?
